About Celeste

A five-time national fiddle champion, Celeste Johnson has over a decade of teaching experience with folks of all ages and levels, including first-time players, adult learners, and experienced musicians. As a teacher, her mission is to pass on traditional fiddle styles and make them accessible to people of all ages and experience levels.

Celeste is a five-time champion at the National Old Time Fiddle Contest, the 2024 Washington State Fiddle Champion, the 2023 RockyGrass Fiddle champion, the 2019 Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddle champion, a two-time Rocky Mountain Regional Fiddle Champion, and a multiple-time Colorado State fiddle champion in her division. Several of her students have gone on to win state and national titles themselves.

Raised in the Texas-style fiddling tradition, Celeste's love of fiddling extends far beyond fiddle contests. She performs and teaches within a variety of genres, including Western Swing, traditional swing, hot jazz, country, Bluegrass, and more.

As a teacher, Celeste's sole focus is fiddling. It's her priority to pass on these traditional acoustic genres with authenticity, all the way down to each bow pattern within the tune. Celeste specializes in teaching the nuances that make someone sound like a real deal fiddler (not a classical player).

Celeste teaches all ages and has extensive experience working with brand-new beginners all the way through advanced fiddlers. Whether you're just picking up the fiddle for the first time or you've been playing for years, you'll find a clear path to your musical goals (and musical joy!) in lessons with Celeste.

When she’s not playing fiddle, Celeste loves to read, travel, and pet cats. She holds a B.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

About Celeste’s Teaching

I teach by ear, the way fiddle tunes have been passed down for hundreds of years. In lessons, I emphasize good technique, rhythmic groove, and stylistic authenticity. Oh, and the most important thing: fun!

Included in lessons, every student receives guitar tracks, instructional videos, chord charts, sheet music when needed, listening reference tracks, and other helpful practice tools.

By learning sequential fiddle tunes, each of my students gradually builds skills that allow for jamming, performing, improvising, competing, and ensemble playing. Fiddle lessons are an excellent musical education on their own, but they also work very well as a companion to classical study.

In lessons, I can help you...

  • learn to improvise

  • have more fun at jams

  • grow your repertoire

  • understand music theory

  • develop good technique

  • practice more effectively

  • strengthen your performance abilities

  • become part of a musical community

  • and more!

Wherever you are on your journey with the fiddle, I'd love to help you find a clear path to your musical goals. For lesson availability, pricing, and other questions, please contact me.
